totally my fault.
turns out that the initrd is already compressed to thats:
  $ cp initrd <linux build>/arch/powerpc/boot/ramdisk.image.gz

  3. $ make <linux flags> zImage.initrd

Then try using <linux build>/arch/powerpc/boot/zImage.initrd as your
Dom0
[...]
checking if image is initramfs...it isn't (no cpio magic); looks like an initrd
Freeing initrd memory: 3328k freed

[...]

RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
No filesystem could mount root, tried: reiserfs ext3 ext2 cramfs msdos vfat iso9660 Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown- block(8,3)
