Right, that would be a step forward. Something that make it clear that
it isn't a proper deb.

Right -- the description in the .deb file already tries to make clear that "this is not a proper deb"; "make testdeb" or something like that would hopefully make it more obvious.  ("make tardeb" maybe?)

That still won't change the fact that this is a bit of functionality that lots of people really want.
