Not at all, you should be free to mix and match. My point was that you
may need slightly different configuration for a PV guest vs an HVM one.

The approach you are taking should be easy, I'm at a loss to explain why
it doesn't work for you.

Did you try connecting to the VNC as I suggested?

Have you looked in /var/log/xen to see if there are any interesting
messages under there?

What version of Xen are you running and where did you get it from (e.g.
self-built vs. packages)? If you are just interested in getting a domain
up and running ASAP then I would strongly suggest you use the Xen
packages supplied by your distribution rather than building them
yourself. I'm not sure which distro you are running though.
