-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi James,There are many reasons, hardware support and security mostly. The system my Xen server is supposed to run on, is about 6 months old (the hardware itself was released spring 2008) and contains it components that simply aren't supported in a kernel that is more than two years old. Support isn't much of a problem either, since I've never had a problem with a running system that I couldn't fix (even if it ment coding a little) and I have a bit of experience on packaging too. The problem is, it's not enough to forward-port the existing stuff, so I need a proper patchset to start. I'm currently still trying a few different things in hope of getting the bugs in the Novells kernel 2.6.27 out of the way, but not much luck so far. So if you, or anyone else has some hints for me, that would be really great. Thanks, Paul. - -- Paul Schulze Mail: avlex gmx net ($1@$2.$3) Public Key: http://solaris-net.dyndns.org/keys/key_avlex.asc "Making mistakes is human, but to really screw things up, you need Computers" Am 25.01.2009 um 11:15 schrieb James Harper: Hi everyone, I am currently trying to get an up-to-date Dom0/U kernel for my Ubuntu Hardy server with Xen 3.3 to work. I have tried patching the Ubuntu Intrepid kernel 2.6.27 with the Gentoo patches, created from Novells kernel 2.6.27-xen.hg tree and the Novell kernel itself, but I keep getting BUG()s all over the place and than the kernel crashes, so both seem out of the question. I have also tried to find patches for kernel 2.6.25-26, but no luck so far (I know Debian has some, but I haven't found the correct ones in the source package). Does anyone know a working set of kernel patches for Xen 3.3, that makes use of the full range of Xen features? I especially need PvSCSI and PCI Passthrough (with the Passthrough backend), because some of my hardware doesn't seem to work correctly with the way, the Hardy kernel handles it.Is there a particular reason that you need Ubuntu kernel packages and runtime? I went down the same path with Debian but just had problemafter problem and in the end just did downloaded the source from xen andcompiled and installed it. The only thing I lost was the ability to automatically switch runtimes based on the version of xen/linux I booted, but I never used it so it wasn't a big loss. If you go down the path of trying to make patches apply to an existingUbuntu kernel source then you will be on your own as far as support goes- Ubuntu probably won't want to talk to you since you have put patcheson their kernel, and xen-users/xen-devel probably won't want to talk toyou for the same reason.
