I thought Waldi sent patches for most of hte other backends ages ago and
this stuff just works these days.

Yes, here we are:
commit 149bb2fab547253e6359e76f1b86b95247110e68
Author: Bastian Blank <waldi@xxxxxxxxxx>
Date: Wed Jun 29 14:40:08 2011 +0200

xen: Add module alias to autoload backend drivers

All the Xen backend drivers are assigned to a special bus type
xen-backend. This patch exports xen-backend:* names through modalias and
    uevent to autoload them.

Seems to have been in 3.1-rc1.

Maybe there are other driver which this didn't affect, evtchn etc
perhaps? I wonder if it is worth init time Xen code synthesising some
uevents iff running on Xen to make these get loaded...

Ian.
