At the boot prompt, edit the boot command line to remove "splash" or boot 
"safe" (I think) to boot without the graphical splash screen - that will 
hopefully show you the error which might get you passed the problem.

I assume the problem is that hotfix 4 included a new kernel but you don't have 
the driver disk that you need as well?  All kernel hotfixes that you install 
must also be accompanied by the appropriate drivers as they are specific to the 
kernel version (even if the ABI hasn't changed)
