Setting up backend in normal VM

I think I'm trying to do something similar to what others have done
before, but with a distinct difference. Unfortunately even the setup
similar to what I'm doing isn't well documented, so I've gotten
frustrated enough to ask here instead of digging deeper in the wrong
places.

How does one setup a network backend (might apply to block backend too)
in a mostly-"normal" DomU?

xl-network-configuration doesn't state much about the "backend" and
"vifname" parameters. Is "backend=" required to be a domain #? Does a
domain name or UUID work? How free-form is the "vifname=" parameter?
