Hi Paul, It is not clear to me if you have a fresh install or already a working OS on the server. I have experienced trouble installing Debian 9 on a Dell R740 as the Perc controller was not recognised at install time. This Perc H740P controller is too new and is not supported by the 4.9 kernel and it is support as of the 4.11 kernel (not 100% sure). If you already have an OS on the server then you should try to use the 4.16/17/18 kernels of backports. Those will boot. I do have a patched installer ISO with a newer hacked in megaraid driver which worked for me. If you want to give that a try, send me a private mail.
