Got that completely backwards.  Thought, mistakenly, hdtype=ahci does 
not 'emulate'.
As pointed out,

Removing

        hdtype=ahci

does exactly what's suggested.  On installer launch, it now only sees 
the assigned disks ... all of which are xvdX.
Once installed, the non-UEFI openSUSE Guest boots successfully.
