Thought, mistakenly, hdtype=ahci does not 'emulate'. As pointed out, http://xenbits.xen.org/docs/unstable/man/xl.cfg.5.html"... adds ich9 disk controller in AHCI mode and uses it with upstream qemu to **emulate** disks instead of IDE ... Removing hdtype=ahcidoes exactly what's suggested. On installer launch, it now only sees the assigned disks ... all of which are xvdX. Once installed, the non-UEFI openSUSE Guest boots successfully.
