Then of course don't forget to run update-initramfs afterwards. The resulting initrd is 3.0 MB. You didn't say how it went with the stock 2.6.38-8-server (have you tried)? The reason I keep suggesting it is that it's possible to have some features not working in a particular kernel version due to bugs/regression.
