Second, I ran a test on two identical servers with DRBD and GFS in a Primary/Primary cluster setup and the performance numbers were appalling compared to local ext3 storage, for example: Well, first off, ask yourself why you're using a cluster filesystem in the first place. Do you have active-active writers on the same filesystem at the same time? If the answer is no, then get rid of GFS -- you don't need it. Second, what's this about DRDB *and* SAN? Are the disks shared (SAN) or DRDB (local RAID)?
