If you have the money to buy an extra machine, install OpenSolaris on it 
and set up a nice ZFS with iSCSI setup... your performance would 
probably be 10x better :)
If you don't have the money, it is the poor mans solution to use 
propriatary xen-qcow and achieve 3.0MB/s with a if=/dev/zero of=/swap :)
