With network manager the best way is to setup a bridge device which does *not* enslave the physical device. Guests will attach their VIFs to this bridge. Run dnsmasq on the bridge to service DHCP & DNS, and use IPTables to do MASQ to the real LAN. So guests can always talk to each other whether there is a connection or not. By using MASQ, then traffic will automatically be routed to LAN or WLAN according to what networkmanager has activated.
