It's more likely a missing initrd module for your disk controller.
What messages appear during boot?
Did you run mkinitrd?

       root (hd0,0)
       kernel /xen.gz dom0_mem=256M
       module /vmlinuz-2.6.16-xen ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 init 3
