More info: I tried the Xen 2.0.6 Live CD and got the same results - the 
"grub>" prompt.
So I tried different hardware.  They both worked a treat on a fairly new 
AMD64 desktop system.  The system they wouldn't boot from is an Acer 
Aspire 1313LC laptop.
Submitted a bug.
