OK. I figured it out. I'm a bit embarrassed!

Turns out I was recycling the VMWare VM which I had used with the 2.0.6
iso. While hacking around I had copied parts of 2.0.6 to the virtual
hard disk and made it bootable. So I was booting the virtual hard drive
and it was running the initrd from 2.0.6 against the 3.0 CD.
