I wonder, btw, whether we shouldn't ease these by making a macro
along the lines of
#define ASSERT_BAIL(cond, retval...) do { \
if ( unlikely(!(cond)) ) { ASSERT_UNREACHABLE(); return retval; } \
} while (0)
