Just FTR, I do my day to day development and testing on Debian
unstable, which means I build (several times a day) without any issue
with (right now):

Âgcc version 5.3.1 20160101 (Debian 5.3.1-5)

and:

$ apt-cache policy binutils
binutils:
 Installed: 2.25.90.20160101-1
 Candidate: 2.25.90.20160101-1
 Version table:
Â*** 2.25.90.20160101-1 500

ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
