I think it should be sufficient just to drop the Debian kernel into an empty filesystem attached to the guest, just doing "kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz ; boot" from the grub command line seems to replicate the issue for me. Probably easier than actually going through an installation. I can send you the vmlinuz if you think that approach is worth trying.
