I think the unnecessary difference between request and response
headers is undesirable.  I would put the id at the front of both.

Where do the fixed packet size of 80 bytes and the fixed maximum
channel of 15 come from ?  What if we want to change these later ?
Is that likely ?  What's our extension plan ?
