AIUI the motivation for this is that this code needs to be reused by
some of the remus series.  In general it is more usual to retain a
patch like this as an initial part of such a series, even after it has
been acked.  It would normally be applied with the rest of the series,
or perhaps if there is substantial initial subseires which is acked.

But given that this is a refactoring patch and is of quite high
quality IMO I think it would be reasonable to apply it now.
