After looking at the full log, this isn't mysterious at all:

  SYSCALL arch/i386/kernel/vsyscall-syms.o
gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-m'
gcc: error: elf_i386: No such file or directory
make[6]: *** [arch/i386/kernel/vsyscall-syms.o] Error 1
make[5]: *** [arch/i386/kernel] Error 2
make[5]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

And it makes it likely that I won't really need the build tree for
this one.

But I'll have to go dig out what upstream did to fix this...
