I think the test you have done here is as a regular user (because I see the $ instead of #), could you execute the same command as you would call xl (either as root or with sudo)?

Yes, I did not notice that, but I was logged on as root. I was fiddling the prompt colours and I made a mistake for the root PS1 properties. I am still learning about the linux environment. :)
