I agree and I've got such a patch somewhere that I could polish off (and will). I'd argue that the json output should be the default with sxp requiring a special option, even though that break backwards compat with xm. I have a hard time believing that the sexp printed by xl is close enough to the xm one that people haven't already been hacking around it in their parsers anyway...
