It has the same effect:

#ifdef CONFIG_HVC_XEN
                if (!strncmp(buf, "xen", 3))
                        early_console_register(&xenboot_console, keep);
#endif

Just doing 'earlyprintk=xen' is enough. Not sure why I actually have 'xenboot' 
..hmm
