This is a quick and dirty hack which brings back the old xend solution, with all the brokenness and caveats described in IanJ's mail from last night (it's worse than the previous xend solution if anything). We should _not_ be recommending to users that they do this. Stefano, please do not muddy the waters for people trying to upgrade by doing so.
