 I switched to stable-2.6.32.x branch (which is 2.6.32.21 based) but I get the same problem. Attached is the Xorg.0.log file when I booted with nomodeset option.
 
 interestingly I did not see any kernel or driver crash messages in the dmesg output. I do see these messages multiple times in /var/log/messages
