The latest 4.0.2-rc1-pre fixes my problem. I saw the patch
http://xenbits.xensource.com/xen-4.0-testing.hg?rev/965d47d5d7c2 which 
looked relevant, so I tried a build including it and my laptop keyboard 
and mouse work again.
