While Keir is right and you can put children in a node with data, it should be noted that the XenStore protocol suggests that you should not do this (i.e. a node should contain either data or children, but not both). There is work being done on a new XenStore designed to fix the security and performance problems with the current version and this is one problem that is slated to be fixed.
