We use gcc-3.2.x and 3.3.x ourselves. We accept patches to unstable to 
keep the build working with gcc4 but even then, I've seen weird crashes 
(e.g., dom0 unable to even reach a boot prompt) that I have never 
observed when building with gcc3.
In short: I recommend you to install a gcc3-series compiler and build 
with that. It's very easy to do and then you're on the same page as us.
