I just went ahead and got the xen-2.0-testing tarball, and build the hypervisor and userspace utilities. After restarting, I tried starting the FreeBSD kernel inside a Xen domain; the result is currently the same. I'll check the BIOS settings and see if, perhaps, there's something relevant, but at this point, I'm still guessing it's something about this machine.
