No login credentials are needed.  Currently the providers talk to xend
over Unix domain socket - and only root processes can connect to this
socket.  You should have

(xen-api-server ((unix none)))

in /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp, which starts the Xen API server on Unix
domain socket with authentication disabled.

Perhaps you have some leftover xen-unstable bits on your system.  I do a
'make uninstall' on my unstable installation before installing the SuSE
packaged xen bits.
