[Xen-API] How can i build an XCP developing environment?

If i want change or add some functions in xapi and test them, how can i build a developing and debugging environment? 

If i install XCP (like 1.5) from ISO, then download the source code of xapi of the same version, then modify, compile and install it, could the changes take effect?  or i should build everything from source to an ISO?

The XAPI/XCP developer guide is so poor in wiki, how can i find more instuctions? I've also searched the mailing list but could not find more useful infomations.
